Understanding The Types of Medicare
Currently, 15 percent of the population in the United States is enrolled in one of the four Medicare programs. This is more than 44 million beneficiaries, and most use Medicare health insurance as a supplemental plan for those who have existing health care coverage. There are four different Medicare plans.
- Part A: This is essentially hospital insurance and covers hospice care, nursing facility care, home health care and inpatient hospital stays.
- Part B: Basic medical insurance, Part B covers outpatient care, preventive services, medical supplies and other doctors’ services.
- Part C: Medicare Advantage plans are offered through a private insurance company and include all of Part A and Part B, plus some additional benefits. These plans also provide access to: special needs plans, health maintenance organizations, private fee-for-service plans, preferred provider organizations and Medicare medical savings account plans.
- Part D:
Prescription drug coverage or Medicare part D provides enhanced prescription drug coverage and is offered to some Medicare cost plans, original Medicare, Medicare medical savings account plans and some Medicare Private-Fee-for Service Plans.
Choosing the Right Medicare Plan
Every person is unique and has specific needs when it comes to health insurance, so we provide help for people in Sonoma County enrolling in Medicare. We help you pick the plan that is ideal for you and fits your medical needs. When choosing coverage, there are seven things you should consider.
- Costs: what are the costs for deductibles, premium, doctor visits, hospital stays and other medical treatment?
- Coverage:
does the plan you are considered cover the treatment that you need?
- Quality of care:
will you be satisfied with the quality of care you receive on your chosen plan?
- Prescription drugs: does the plan you chose cover your prescription costs, or do you have other coverage to handle it?
- Choice:
are you able to choose the hospitals and doctors you prefer with your plan?
- Additional coverage: how does each Medicare plan interact with your current health care coverage?
- Travel: does your Medicare cover you if you are traveling?
